School

I had one high school class that has impacted the rest of my life, have you?

Happy Easter everyone! This has been such a wonderful day to remember Jesus Christ and all He has done for me and for each one of us. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to go to Church and have the freedom to worship as I would like to. I am also grateful for dinner with family and friends, and remembering the Savior all throughout the day. I hope you all have had a wonderful day today as well.

Today one of the writing prompts on my website asked what is something you learned in High School. At first I skipped over that prompt but as I have sat here thinking about this today, a number of thoughts have run through my mind that I thought I would like to share.

High School wasn’t my favorite place to be, not that there was anything wrong with it. I had friends, and I did well in school, but I knew high school was not an end all place to be. I wanted to move on with life and experience the rest of what life had to offer, so in some ways I never really reached for my full potential in school. I did what I needed to do to get good grades, but I didn’t put in a lot of effort. I had wonderful teachers who I enjoyed learning from and fun classes that I took, but I was so ready to be done by the time I graduate. But I did have one class that has impacted me more than any of the others over the years.

This one might sound funny, but I loved my human biology class. I had a great teacher so it was easy to learn in the class, but the human body as a whole has always fascinated me. That class propelled me forward into a lifelong study of the human body and how the different systems work. Particularly of interest to me was the musculoskeletal system, the cardiovascular system and the immune system. Over the years I have learned quite a lot about each system and how they work.

When I was a senior in High School I took the EMT I class, but was too young to actually become an EMT, so then when I moved to Alaska I took it again and got my certification and worked on the local ambulance until I got pregnant with my first child. I loved working as an EMT and the knowledge I gained through that experience has assisted me on many occasions since. I also got certified as a phlebotomist and an EKG technician and worked for a short time in a pharmacy as well. I have loved each one of these certifications and jobs. Each one of these has given me understanding, a lot of which comes in handy when you have children!

I have also had a lifelong love of exercise and staying fit. Over the years I have learned, a lot of times through injury, how to exercise properly, about balance in muscles, especially opposing muscles, as well as how exercise not only strengthens the muscles, but the skeletal system as well. I have learned how diet affects all of the systems, especially the immune system, and how to help my body heal mostly through diet and exercise rather than through prescription medications (which are sometimes necessary as well). I am grateful for that human biology class that began the process of really learning to understand, and sparked that interest in me so long ago. Did you have a high school class that had a large impact on your life?
