I am a watercolor artist. I do not enjoy drawing for the most part. I want to get the basic lines down and then get right into painting as that’s what I enjoy most and what I find most relaxing.
That doesn’t mean I don’t do it. I do enjoy drawing flowers once in a while, and when I do a finished flower composition, often I draw this myself from multiple other references or just from my mind.
But if I have my choice, I will either use one of my own pictures, or a copywrite free picture and trace the basic lines. This is much quicker and no, it’s not cheating. This gets me to the painting process faster, and the part I enjoy more.
But recently I have decided that I should at least learn how to do basic drawings. I am taking several courses on a platform called Udemy. I have actually taken quite a number of courses, most of them great, some of them I wish I hadn’t purchased, but sometimes you can’t tell at first.

I found one about trees that I thought would be a fun course. It said it was for both the drawing and painting, so I was intrigued. The drawing portion of the class was absolutely fantastic, and the teacher was fun, which made it more enjoyable. I learned a lot and one of my sons was impressed with what I was able to come up with.
The painting course not so informative. It said it was for every medium and included watercolor on the list. It was very apparent, very quickly that this person had never actually painted with watercolor. It is a different medium from all the rest. I quit there, but really did learn from and enjoy the drawing portion.
I am now on to another drawing course, I will share pictures and what the subject matter is when I have started drawing in the course. I have just gotten past the intro and supplies and I’ve watched the first drawing exercise, but haven’t had time to complete it yet.
