I have a fondness instilled in my heart by my dad for old cars, and going to car shows has been greatly missed living here in Alaska.

You May Not Have Known

I was looking back through my pictures from my recent trip up the Alcan and realized that I hadn’t posted about something that I have enjoyed since I was a kid, but rarely get to enjoy here in Alaska.

Red Corvette with T tops. Not sure the year, but beautifully restored.

My dad loves cars, especially older cars, but he loves all things cars and keeps up on the latest technologies as well. Growing up in Southern Utah, there were a fair number of car shows throughout the summer, and my dad loved to go and look around as many as he could each year.

That meant that we also got to go to car shows all through my growing up years and I learned to love old cars, especially well restored old cars. My husband is a big car guy as well, but again, we don’t have car shows here, so that’s not something we have done much together and not something our kids have been raised around.

The day before we left for Alaska we drove north to stay with my son-in-law’s parent overnight for a visit and a fun party with his relatives. On the way we stopped for a restroom break and noticed a poster about a car show in one of the towns we would be driving through. Shortly thereafter my son-in-law called and told us about it as well and thought there was probably enough time if we wanted to stop.

That was all the encouragement my dad and I needed, and we stopped to look. My son had never been to a car show, and I hadn’t been to one in over 20 years, so it was a fun little side excursion. My son, being a car guy as well, had a lot of fun looking at these beautifully restored cars, and my dad shared a little information with him about some of them as we walked around.

My dad has owned several corvettes, I don’t know if it’s his favorite car, but there were several there that were similar in year to his, and it was fun to see him walk around those cars as well as to watch my son enjoy walking around those same cars. My husband also has an old corvette that needs restoring, so it gave my son some great reference and ideas for what it might look once it was restored.

This car show wasn’t a huge one, just a little city park, it didn’t take us even an hour to walk through, but it was so fun, almost like eating your mom’s comfort food. I am so grateful we had time (although we were late for lunch) to spend that little bit of time doing something my dad and I love, and sharing that with my son.
